Petrolia elementary schools reunion set
A reunion for all who attended Jubilee, Maude Street & Central Schools in Petrolia is being held Saturday, May 25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion's Petrolia branch 216 hall.
The cost is $10 to cover expenses & snacks and there will be a cash bar. The organizing committee has pictures and the names of students in all grades in 1948. These pictures can be found at www.petroliaheritage.com (scroll down under “Miscellaneous” to 1948 Petrolia Schools Reunion).
Anyone with pictures of classes or students before or after this date can bring them to the reunion.
Bradshaw said a first reunion of students who attended the three elementary schools was in 2008 and 225 people attended.
It's now five years later and the organizing committee is having another reunion. The reunion is not limited to people who attended the school in 1948.
“We have lost a few since then,” said Bradshaw, but organizers are still hoping for good attendance at this year's reunion.
She was in Grade 4 in 1948 and first attended Maude Street School, then Central School. Switching from one school to another was done when classes became overcrowded.
There was an average of 40 students per class and 12 classes per school back then.
Maude Street School closed after Queen Elizabeth II School opened in 1953; Central School closed in the mid-1950s and Jubilee School closed in the early 1970s when Hillcrest School opened.
Bradshaw admitted people change appearances and sometimes names over the years and that's why “We look at the name tag first. We are all in the same boat.”
