The Petrolia Flyers have been on a hot streak, winning four games in row, including a defeat over the number one team in the league Thursday night.

The Flyers skated away with a win of 5 – 3, with goals scored by Eric Marsh, Drew Morgan, Zach VanEyk, Kole Keating and Curtis Helps.

General Manager Dennis Meston said they’re happy with how the season is going so far. The Flyers are currently tied with Wheatley at fifth place overall. He said for the last two years, the young team came in eighth place.

“We’ve competed in pretty much every game, we’ve lost three in overtime, some one and two goals games,” he said. “It’s fun going to the rink knowing you have a chance.”

This year’s roster has players with more experience on the ice – Meston credits this experience as to why they’re doing so well. He said only two of their players are first time players in junior hockey.

“We took a step back and developed the kids,” he said. “It helps when you’ve got experienced players…and our coaches are doing a great job.”

Meston said the team is confident but remaining humble early on. With two strong goalies taking turns in net, he said they’re working well as a team and remaining organized on and off the ice.

“They’re working hard,” he said. “We’re happy, this is what we’re wanting to accomplish…17 points in 17 games…we’re right where we want to be.”

Meston said they’ve also been seeing great support from fans in the stands – they always have attendance of over 200, something that helps to get the players motivated at game time.

Petrolia takes on Wheatley Monday night, and they are back on home ice Thursday night, where they will face off against Wallaceburg.
