Jury selection is set to begin Monday, Feb. 6 for the trial of a 44-year-old man charged with the first-degree murder of a 70-year-old Petrolia woman in 1983. Velma Thomson died from multiple stab wounds and had been sexually assaulted.

Unusually mild weather for this time of year has brought an early arrival of tundra swans to north Lambton. About 400 of the majestic white birds have landed just south of Kettle Point. Each year, the tundra swans migrate some 6,500 kilometres from the U.S.

A by-election will be held in Jack Layton’s former riding on March 12, the prime minister’s office announced Sunday. The riding of Toronto-Danforth, which Layton claimed in 1997, has not been represented in the House of Commons since the former NDP leader died from cancer in August.
